New Study Finds Switching to Vapes or Heated Tobacco Products Boosts Aerobic Fitness in Just Weeks

A new peer-reviewed study published in Scientific Reports has found that smokers who switch to electronic cigarettes (ECs) or heated tobacco products (HTPs) may experience measurable improvements in aerobic capacity in as little as four weeks. 

Led by researchers at the Center of Excellence for the acceleration of Harm Reduction (CoEHAR) at the University of Catania, this study is the first to offer prospective clinical evidence that substituting cigarettes with non-combustible alternatives can positively impact cardiorespiratory health.

🔍 What the Research Shows 

 

The study observed adult smokers who transitioned to either ECs or HTPs. After just four weeks, participants demonstrated statistically significant improvements in aerobic capacity, measured through indicators such as VO₂ max—a key metric of cardiovascular and respiratory performance. 

Participants also showed better endurance, improved heart rate recovery, and increased oxygen uptake, suggesting their bodies were becoming more efficient during physical activity.
