New Study Confirms: E-Cigarettes Are Helping Americans Quit Smoking

A fresh analysis published in the Harm Reduction Journal is adding yet another piece to the growing body of evidence supporting vaping as a powerful tool for smoking cessation. The study “Trends in US adult tobacco use, 2011–2022” draws a clear line between rising e-cigarette use and falling cigarette smoking rates across the U.S.

📉 Cigarette Smoking Rates Continue to Decline

The researchers analyzed more than a decade’s worth of data, from 2011 to 2022, and found that as adult vaping increased, smoking prevalence steadily declined. These findings reinforce what many harm reduction advocates have been saying for years: vaping isn't a gateway to smoking—it’s a gateway out.

Highlights from the study include:

  • Smoking rates among U.S. adults dropped from 19.0% in 2011 to 11.5% in 2022.

  • E-cigarette use among adults rose from 1.4% in 2011 to 6.7% in 2022.

  • The most significant decreases in cigarette use were among young adults, who also showed the highest adoption of e-cigarettes.

🔬 What This Means for Public Health

This study adds weight to the argument that vaping is playing a positive role in reducing smoking-related disease and death—especially in populations that have historically been the hardest to reach through traditional cessation methods.

The authors note that:

“Population-level data continue to support the association between increasing e-cigarette use and decreasing cigarette smoking among U.S. adults.”

This aligns with international models of harm reduction—such as Sweden, which is on track to become the first smoke-free country thanks in part to its wide adoption of safer nicotine alternatives like snus and nicotine pouches.

🧠 The Misinformation Gap

Despite this evidence, the public narrative around vaping in the U.S. remains clouded by fear and misinformation. Policies are still being driven by outdated perceptions and alarmist headlines, rather than up-to-date science.

As a result:

  • Adults trying to quit smoking are offered few legal nicotine alternatives.

  • Youth vaping remains the focus of enforcement, while adult harm reduction gets ignored.

  • Flavored products—which help adults quit—are being banned at the local and state levels.

Meanwhile, as this study shows, vaping is doing exactly what it was intended to do: helping people quit smoking.

🛑 A Call for Smarter Regulation

Rather than continuing to restrict access to vaping products through state-level bans and PMTA registry laws that disproportionately harm small businesses, it’s time for the FDA and policymakers to lean into the data.

This study is one more reminder that:

  • Vaping works.

  • Regulations should reflect reality—not rhetoric.
