New CoEHAR Umbrella Review: No Significant Impact on Lung Function with E-Cigarette Use

A groundbreaking umbrella review conducted by the Center of Excellence for the Acceleration of Harm Reduction (CoEHAR) has found no significant impact on lung function among users of e-cigarettes (ECs). This comprehensive study adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the relative safety of vaping compared to traditional smoking.

Key Findings of the Review

  • The review systematically examined the respiratory effects of e-cigarette use by differentiating between exclusive users, dual users (both ECs and combustible cigarettes), and individuals with no prior use.

  • Researchers analyzed twelve systematic reviews to assess the impact of ECs on lung function over the short and medium term.

  • Across all usage patterns, no significant changes in respiratory function were observed.

Implications for Public Health

The findings of this study challenge ongoing concerns that vaping poses serious risks to lung health. While misinformation about the dangers of vaping continues to circulate, this umbrella review reinforces that e-cigarettes do not have a measurable negative effect on lung function, particularly in comparison to the well-documented harms of combustible cigarettes.

The CoEHAR study supports the stance of numerous harm reduction advocates who argue that switching from smoking to vaping can be a beneficial step for smokers looking to reduce their health risks. As confirmed by previous research, vaping eliminates the combustion process responsible for the vast majority of smoking-related diseases, making it a significantly less harmful alternative.

The Need for Evidence-Based Policy

Despite mounting scientific evidence demonstrating the harm reduction potential of vaping, public health agencies and regulatory bodies remain hesitant to acknowledge its benefits. Misinformation and regulatory crackdowns continue to deter smokers from making the switch, keeping millions at risk of preventable diseases.

The CoEHAR review adds to a growing consensus that e-cigarettes should be recognized as an effective smoking cessation tool rather than demonized alongside combustible tobacco. With millions of lives at stake, it is critical that public health messaging aligns with scientific findings rather than fear-based narratives.
